2020 Kia Telluride Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick Award

Although it didn’t qualify for the agency’s top award, the 2020 Kia Telluride has been named a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The three-row SUV earned Good scores in all crash categories, including the front, side, roof strength, and head restraint and seat tests. It also received a Superior score in front crash prevention thanks to its standard forward collision avoidance assist technology. In both 12 mph and 25 mph tests, the Telluride managed to avoid a crash.

The Telluride’s Acceptable-rated headlights were enough to qualify the SUV for the Top Safety Pick award, but prevented it from earning the Top Safety Pick+ designation. The Acceptable rating applies to the LED projector beam headlights on the top SX trim. The halogen lights that come with all other trims received a Poor rating.

With the Acceptable-rated lights, visibility was good on both sides of the road on the straightaway and through curves, IIHS said of the low beams, but noted they create “some glare.” Visibility on the high beams of the Acceptable-rated lights was “inadequate” on both sides of the road on the straightaway, IIHS said.

To qualify for the Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle must earn Good ratings in every crash category, with the exception of the new passenger-side small overlap front test, in which an Acceptable rating is admissible. Vehicles also need an Advanced or Superior rating in front crash prevention, and a Good or Acceptable headlight rating. The 2020 Kia Telluride has not yet been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
