A Look Back: Lee Iacocca Debuts Silver 45th Edition Ford Mustang
The passing of legendary automotive icon Lee Iacocca brings to mind the last time he visited MotorTrend, in the summer of 2009, shortly after we moved into our new headquarters in El Segundo, California. He was promoting his limited edition, 45th Anniversary custom-bodied 400-horsepower Ford Mustang and came to our office with one in tow. Only 45 of these Iacocca Mustangs were ever made, and they were sold exclusively through Galpin Ford, for a starting price of $89,950. Serial number 001 sold at its debut auction for $125,000. Was it a good investment? Maybe – maybe not. At the 2018 Barrett-Jackson auction in Palm Beach, Florida, number 20 of the 45 made, was auctioned for a winning bid of $64,900.00.
Forty-five years after he rolled out the very first Ford Mustang, famed American car designer and executive Lee Iacocca announced the arrival of another ‘Stang, labeled the Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Ford Mustang.
It’s sleeker, and definitely more striking, compared to the standard ‘Stang. Iacocca’s particular edition is MY2009.5, meaning it just missed getting the full model-year 2010 redesign treatment. Nonetheless, it’s still quite the eye-catcher, with sunken headlights, a slanted grille, lowered stance, and an iconic fastback exterior design. We’re guessing its 20-inch chrome alloys will turn some heads on the street, too.
Co-designer and builder Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters focused much attention on styling rather than all-out performance and left the Mustang’s 4.6L V-8 heart untouched. An optional supercharged V-8 making 400 hp can be had if customers choose, and both are covered under a Ford-backed warranty.
Tight diamond leather with a matching dash placard, as well as all the Mustang’s standard amenities, are featured on the Iacocca model.
Only 45 units of the Iacocca Silver will be built at a yet undisclosed price, but all information should be available come next month when it is publicly debuted at its only authorized dealer, Galpin Ford.
