The number of residence permits issued by Malta last year was the highest within the European Union in relation to the population, fresh data shows. According to the EU’s statistics office, 8,885 first residence permits were issued, that is about 20 permits per 1,000 inhabitants. This is the highest rate across the European Union, with the majority of the permits being issued to citizens from Serbia, who got 11.9 per cent of the total. Listening to Tuesday’s debate in the European Parliament was painful.  An even harsher replica of the first debate on Malta a few months ago. As a Maltese citizen, having to witness such a barrage against my country sent shivers down my spine. The 466 votes in favour, 49 against and 160 abstentions, condemning my country, simply said it all: politicians of all hues and shades believe that the rule of law in Malta is not functioning properly. It was reported that Nils Muižnieks was ‘taken aback’ by what he considers lack of debate about abortion in Malta. We can reassure him that, in Malta, we do not need prodding from him or anyone else on the freedom to debate any issue under the sun. Yet, as a human rights commissioner, we expect him to know that the most fundamental ‘human right’ is the right to life. Without it, there can be no other rights. David Stellini, PN spokesman for European Affairs Malta is fantastic. For foreigners, and for Maltese nationals like me who lived abroad for many years, Malta is great. Great weather, low tax rates and a safe environment where people are friendly and welcoming. At least this is the perception out there. Or is it? Well, I hope it still is. The MSE Equity Total Return Index extended its negative performance for the fifth consecutive week having declined by one per cent to close at 8,601.699 points. A total of 15 issues were active during the week of which eight closed lower, while GO plc and Medserv plc shares were the only gainers this week. Among the weakest performers, Simonds Farsons Cisk plc and Plaza Centres plc shares registered heavy declines in excess of 7.5 per cent. As a frequent visitor to Malta, where I usually reside in Qawra, I could notice how the bus service has deteriorated since the demise of Arriva, which was succeeded by Malta Public Transport. Whoever draws up the timetables does not have a clue how to run a bus service. When Arriva ran the service, it seemed to have tourism in mind. Tourism, it should be noted, and tourists bloat the population by about a million. Under Arriva, buses from Qawra to Valletta ran every 15 minutes, until 11pm. Anna Mallia’s view that “the judiciary’s only voice is in the judgments” (November 13) beggars belief. The Chief Justice and all members of the judiciary have a legal and moral obligation to uphold, preserve, protect and defend the rule of law in Malta, from the Bench and beyond.

I do not think I will ever have the financial means to take on a self-centred and insensitive businessman like Anġlu Xuereb but all I can do is show everyone the atrocity he is being allowed to impose on our capital city, Valletta. And I say our city because, apparently, if the residents themselves do not take these things up, no one will. Xuereb does not give a hoot about Valletta. He just wants to line uphis pockets.
