Some Canadians are urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to seek peace with the U.S. president. Many others want him to hang tough even as Trump seeks to make political hay with his anti-Canada rhetoric. Читать дальше...

CINCINNATI (AP) — Attorneys for a Tennessee woman serving a life sentence for killing a man when she was 16 are asking federal appellate judges to throw out her sentence, in a case that has attracted celebrity attention. Cyntoia Brown's attorneys will argue Thursday before a 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled against life-without-parole sentences for juveniles, but Tennessee has argued successfully in lower courts that Brown does have a possibility for parole — after serving 51 years. MIAMI - These are not your 1997 Marlins who won the World Series. Or your 2003 Marlins who did the same. These are your latest stripped-down Marlins who have no hope or, in the front office’s case, desire to contend in 2018. Yet, here they are, one win from sweeping the Giants in a four-game series for the first time in the South Florida franchise’s 25-year existence. Following a pattern of continually coughing up leads, the Giants fell 5-4 Wednesday night at Marlins Park, their third loss in the series. Читать дальше...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Halfway through a news conference Wednesday, the head of the world's most powerful central bank was asked a question weighing on the minds — and the checking accounts — of Americans everywhere: When will people finally start getting meaningful pay raises? Jerome Powell, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, had no satisfactory answer. He called it a "puzzle." And then, as if measuring his words, he said he wasn't prepared to call it a "mystery." Puzzle or mystery, the source of the consternation is this... Читать дальше...
The Raiders may not be the only NFL team with a competition at kicker this summer, but theirs could easily be the most polite. Otherwise it would just seem awkward. Incumbent Giorgio Tavecchio is back. Also in camp is Eddy Piñeiro, whom the Raiders signed as an undrafted free agent but considered drafting. And their new holder, rookie punter Johnny Townsend, was Piñeiro’s college teammate and holder the past two years. It’s an unusual dynamic by which Tavecchio, the left-footer with NFL experience... Brett Haley’s new movie, “Hearts Beat Loud,” isn’t quite in the same league as his best film, “I’ll See You in My Dreams,” but I see what he’s up to, and I’m liking it. At a time when popular American movies are heading in the direction of the huge and the simple, Haley is developing an aesthetic that’s all about the small and the complex. He makes movies about people, emotions, family, life, death - all things that will make his films completely comprehensible 200 years from now. That stuff doesn’t change. Читать дальше...
