TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Police say an Ohio man shot and killed another man who was attacking a woman with an ax. The Blade reports Benjamin Hand told police he saw the man strike the woman with the weapon in Toledo around noon Wednesday. Hand shot the man, and he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:55 p.m. Police have identified the man as 59-year-old Bernard Neyland. WELLS, Maine (AP) — A Maine school district has voted unanimously to remove Native American imagery associated with its mascots from school walls. The Wells-Ogunquit Community School District voted 6-0 Wednesday to adopt a committee's previous recommendation on removing the imagery. The vote concludes a months-long discussion of the Wells High School Warriors nickname and its associated imagery depicting Native Americans. STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio man who thought he was helping give a nurse a ride says he later realized the woman was wearing a jail uniform, and she was handcuffed behind her back. Jimmy Sesto tells WTOV-TV that he was driving along the Market Street Bridge in Steubenville Wednesday when he saw the woman walking by. He stopped to offer her a ride and then realized she was an escapee. Sesto says he asked the woman if there was anyone he could call, and then went to the end of the bridge and called police. CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A former messenger for the West Virginia Parkways Authority has pleaded guilty to stealing $41,000 in cash. WCHS-TV reported Wednesday that 47-year-old Patrick Brady Springman of Bluefield entered the plea to one felony count of embezzlement. Kanawha County Prosecutor Charles Miller says in a statement that Springman admitted to taking the money for his own use over a four-month period last year. RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A new panel of state officials and business leaders has approved a new grant to help train Virginians in making wine, cider, craft beer and hard liquor. Gov. Ralph Northam's office announced Wednesday the GO Virginia board had approved a $250,000 grant for Piedmont Virginia Community College and Germanna Community College. The funds will be used to establish two new training centers and to develop a new curriculum to help train candidates in making alcoholic beverages. Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard has been prescribed more rest after getting a second opinion on a strained ligament in his right index finger.
