ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The New York state Senate has two new members. Democrats Shelley Mayer of Westchester County and Luis Sepulveda of the Bronx were sworn in Monday. Both won special elections last week and both previously served in the state Assembly. Their elections give Democrats a one-seat majority in the 63-member Senate. But Republicans are holding on to power thanks to the support a rogue Democrat, Sen. Simcha Felder of Brooklyn, who sides with the GOP. LAS VEGAS (AP) — A dog has found a permanent home after spending nearly 14 months at a Las Vegas animal shelter. KLAS-TV reports the Vanoy family, which moved to Las Vegas from Colorado a couple months ago, adopted 6-year-old Mona after visiting the Animal Foundation on Saturday. Mona, who was found in 2012 as a stray and had been back to the shelter a couple of times since then, is the Vanoy family's first dog. PLAINFIELD, N.J. (AP) — A driver accused of killing a pedestrian in a hit-and-run accident is now facing charges. Authorities announced Monday that 37-year-old Lavar Jones, of South Plainfield, is accused of leaving the scene of a fatal crash. They say Jones was driving in Plainfield when he struck Sergio Cuxun-Tista around 2:35 a.m. Sunday. The 39-year-old Plainfield man, who was trying to cross a street at the time, was pronounced dead a short time later. Authorities say Jones fled the scene but was arrested a short time later. CENTRAL CITY, Ark. (AP) — A woman in northwest Arkansas alleges she was harassed after filing a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act. The Southwest Times Record reports that Central City City Councilwoman Tonya Fagan filed a request with the city's Water Department in February. Fagan says she wanted a copy of all checks made last year to Central City Mayor Chuck Wallace and his sons, Terry and Dwayne Wallace. The mayor is also the city's water superintendent. Los Angeles police are investigating an alleged domestic violence incident involving Raiders left tackle Donald Penn. No charges have been filed in the incident and no arrests have been made, police said. TMZ first reported the investigation. THORNWOOD, N.Y. (AP) — An off-duty police officer jumped on a coyote and throttled it as the animal attacked a 5-year-old girl on a suburban New York playground. Kasey King-Petrellese told WNBC that the coyote appeared out of nowhere and bolted "like a cheetah" toward her daughter, Natalia, and 3-year-old son on Sunday in Thornwood.
