NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton is resigning his post atop the nation's largest police force, after a tenure in which he received credit for keeping crime down and navigated tension between police and minority communities. Though de Blasio was elected as a sharp critic of a police tactic that involved stopping and searching huge numbers of young black men, he picked Bratton as a sign that he would balance reform with further efforts to drive down crime. Ask Brianna: Is the 'gig economy' all it's cracked up to be?

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

With the release of every cheekily named on-demand app comes a new way for 20- and 30-somethings to make money on the side. The explosion of the "gig economy" — the collection of online platforms that let workers sell their services directly to consumers on their own schedules — has lowered the barrier to entry for workers who need money quickly. The flexibility a gig affords can help you make extra money to pay off your student loans early, for instance, or to pay bills during gaps between jobs. Читать дальше...

‘The Awakening’ a rousing show from the Breadbox

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

If you’re prone to congratulating yourself for your feminist enlightenment, Breadbox Theatre’s production of “The Awakening” is a salutary reminder of how far we as a society — and you, specifically, for this production is nothing if not personal in its indictment of mores — have to go in overcoming sexism. For the journey of Edna Pontellier (Maria Giere Marquis) from unhappy housewife to committed nonconformist — a journey that famously ends in the ocean, where she drowns herself — is not just a feminist tale; it’s also humanist. Scientists' annual physical of planet: 'Earth's fever rises'

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Scientists said the turbo-charged climate affected walrus and penguin populations and played a role in dangerous algae blooms, such as one off the Pacific Northwest coast. Much of the intense record-breaking and record-flirting weather was because of a combination of a natural El Nino — the periodic warming of parts of the Pacific that changes weather globally — and ever increasing man-made global warming. Oklahoma University meteorology professor Jason Furtado said in an email that the report... Читать дальше...
