Melissa McCarthy Celebrates Bridesmaids 10th Anniversary With Throwback Photos
Bridesmaids hit theaters a decade ago, and Melissa McCarthy is celebrating the big anniversary on Instagram. The 2011 classic comedy stars Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig alongside an all-star ensemble cast, which features McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Chris O’Dowd, Rebel Wilson, Jon Hamm, and the late Jill Clayburgh. In the film, Rudolph’s character, Lillian, is getting married and asks her best friend, Annie (Wiig), to be her maid of honor. As Lillian begins this exciting time in her life, Annie goes through a difficult time, both personally and professionally. Bridesmaids takes viewers along throughout all of the major events leading up to Lillian’s wedding, which never go according to plan.
Wiig didn’t just star in the film, she also wrote it with her longtime friend, Annie Mumolo. Although it is uncommon for a comedy to be recognized at the Academy Awards, Bridesmaids earned Wiig and Mumolo a nomination for Best Original Screenplay. McCarthy also earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role as Megan, the sister of the groom.
McCarthy took to Instagram to share a series of three photos in celebration of the film's 10th anniversary. The first photo shows the cast in costume, posing with a smiling Mumolo. A photo of McCarthy with fake vomit all over her is also included within the post. That was from the unforgettable scene in which the bride and almost all of the bridesmaids got food poisoning while trying on fancy dresses. The last picture in the series is a behind the scenes photo with Wilson Phillips, who made a surprise appearance at the end of the film. Check out McCarthy's full post below:
Considering how much love McCarthy still has for Bridesmaids, this likely means she would appear in a sequel if the right idea presented itself. The film’s director, Paul Feig, is understandably wary of a potential sequel because he thinks it would just turn out to be a funny wedding movie that isn’t as heartfelt as Bridesmaids. It’s no secret that sequels oftentimes don’t measure up to their originals, but that isn’t always the case. There are plenty examples of beloved sequels, and a second Bridesmaids could be great as well.
The sequel could be about how Annie and Officer Rhodes are finally able to re-plan their wedding after Covid-19 forced them to postpone it. After all of the characters have been stuck in their homes for a year, they would be ready to party with the best of them, which would undoubtedly lead to some hilarious moments. The world is in need of some laughs, and the cast of Bridesmaids is the perfect team to deliver those laughs. Not only would this sequel be funny, it would also be timely, relatable, and emotionally engaging.
Whether or not a sequel to Bridesmaids actually happens, it is important that female-driven comedies with complex characters continue to be made. Instead of underrepresenting and misrepresenting women like so many comedies have done before, Bridesmaids centers around realistic and genuinely funny women, which is why the film resonates with audiences and critics alike. The success of Bridesmaids created momentum for movies like Girls Trip and Wine Country, but this momentum needs to continue in order to erase the gender inequalities present within the genre.
