(CNBC) Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange was hit Thursday with new federal criminal charges alleging he conspired with former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to obtain and publish secret documents, some of which included the disclosure of identities of foreigners who were aiding the U.S. military abroad.
The new set of charges immediately raised alarms among press freedom advocates, who argue that his disclosures of classified information are protected under the First Amendment.
Assange was charged with 17 new criminal counts, which included violations of the Espionage Act.
